Professor Ramesh Thakur - The UN nuclear ban treaty and Australia
Prof Thakur is Director of the Centre for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament in the Crawford School, The Australian National University and co-Convenor of the Asia-Pacific Leadership Network for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament . He was Vice Rector and Senior Vice Rector of the United Nations University (and Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations) from 1998–2007.
Dr Alison Broinowski - What dependence costs us
Dr Alison Broinowski, formerly an Australian diplomat, including to the Australian Mission to the UN, has written and edited 14 books about the interface between Australia and Asia and Australia’s role in world affairs, the latest being (with David Stephens, The Honest History Book). She is a Research Affiliate at ANU, Vice President of Honest History, Vice President of Australians for War Powers Reform, and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of International Affairs.
Dr Mike Gilligan – Can Australia defend itself?
Mike Gilligan was formerly a senior public servant in the Defence department responsible for capability analysis and development for the defence of Australia.
At this time, when Australia has just increased its military commitment in Afghanistan, the forum will provide a timely opportunity for discussion on the crucial issues of war, peace and independence.
